About the author
Coni Knepper is a children’s books author whose passion is to write about the children living in Tanzania, East Africa, where she and her husband reside full time. She brings life and humor to what could be considered a culture of poverty.
Little Dude and his Shagalabagala Day warmed my heart and made me smile. I work with nonprofits in Boston, Massachusetts that are partnering to end homelessness for families attending our public schools. I will recommend this book to the parents and teachers we work with. Coni Knepper has such a beautiful way of teaching simple but powerful life lessons. All of us have “shagabagala” days, and all of us need to learn how serving others can bring joy to the people we serve and to us.
5.0 out of 5 stars powerful message
This is a book with a sweet and timely message to think of others - no better time than right now when so many people are in need around the world. It was fun to get a picture of life where Little Dude lives. It makes me curious to learn more about the culture and the people.
I especially like the generosity of the author to donate the proceeds from the sale of the book to help children where she lives.
Kids of all ages will identify with the main character in this beautifully illustrated children’s book! Not every day is perfect, but when we are blessed with family or friends who love us and surprise us with unexpected gifts (like Little Dude), our day can suddenly go from gloomy to GLORIOUS! This story is a wonderful treat for your entire family, and you will cheer for its ending!

EYE-CATCHING AND WITH A TIMELESS MESSAGE

Little Dude's life first changed for the better when someone who loved him reached out and clothed him in something amazing. Little Dude, in turn, clothed in his amazing cape, reached out, and began helping others. No more disaster! This story mirrors the love of Jesus for His children, as He reaches out and clothes us in His saving grace. After experiencing the love of Jesus, there is a natural flow on to wanting to spread His love and help others. I would recommend this book to young children as it is clear, easy to read, visually appealing, and has a timeless message. A great read!
Little Dude has a great story. It's full of interesting cultural references that really add some fun! Little Dude has wonderful interactions with his family and learns the power of helping others. My son, 8, and I loved reading the story together. He enjoyed going back and looking up the words that he has not ever heard before. I highly recommend this book! Little Dude will win your heart too!

So wonderful to learn words from Tanzania, to see how they live and my little guy also wishes he could fly and be super!!!! He asks for this book every time I see him and we live on the same property!! Great book
I'm always looking for books about caring for others and introducing my kids to other parts of the world. This was the perfect fit. God bless this author and their service work overseas!
Fun way to introduce culture and language to younger kids. Can’t wait to share with my homeschool group. Also has a great message and worldview.
Comments from my students- "I was interested the whole time and the pictures are perfect!" "I want to read her other books!" I read this story to my fourth-grade classroom and they thought it was soo good! They loved learning the Swahili words and they liked how the boy's actions changed when he got the cape. We also enjoyed the big action words throughout the story, which helped us envision what was happening.
Gurgle Gurgle Splat!
Cute and easy for my preschoolers. Am recommending to 6th graders when they study other countries/cultures. Love that there is a recipe included, would be great for children to try.
Love love this story! It engages the children from the beginning! It’s a real conversation starter with children. I was most impressed with the illustrations...nothing cluttered about it! 🏻Excellent book
I watched my neighbor's daughter and I came across this book. We had so much fun reading it and I thought it was a great way to show children other parts of the world! And, I loved the part about mistakes..what a great lesson to teach your kids...definitely get this book...I'm sure your kids will want to read this over and over!
My children and I love this book. Gurgle Gurgle Splat is a book every family should have it of their shelf. It's simple, cute, and adorable. Love the sound effects (Flap Flap, Crackle Crackle), which keep my kids engaged in the story. I would recommend this book to anyone with children.
Flip Flop Drip Drop
This book is so fun for my toddlers. The illustrations are cute and colorful. The words are few so my boys can write the story themselves. One day the oil can is a train, the next a mixer. One day the monkey is in a mango tree, the next a cherry tree. Reading it helps them learn to look for clues in the pages and in the expressions of the characters to decipher what is happening. It helps them see how fun simple things can be for the little boy, while helping them have fun simply.
In a time when we want to be more mindful and appreciative of other cultures, this book is perfectly timed. From understanding that there are people who look different than me and live in places that look different than mine to learning how to be creative and have fun in a place with limited resources is really a gold mine for parents as we teach children to love and appreciate everyone. I will buy all of Coni's books, as she has an up close and personal perspective that I appreciate so much.
Not only do my kids love the book, it is a great addition to our home school library.
My kids love reading this book (since they are just learning how to read). They also enjoy seeing a little what it is like in Tanzania. Love the illustrations
I loved this sweet book. I have been to Tanzania and I loved the illustrations. I bought this book for my grandson’s ages 5 and 2. They want the book read to them serval times a week.
When I Grow Up
I was inspired and entertained by the true stories of each individual child. They touched my soul in a way I will not soon forget.
It may be a devotional, but I sure couldn't put the book down and read it straight through! The author did a fabulous job introducing us to each child. You were rooting for each child, their family, and the teachers and your own hope is refreshed through the stories of these children. Thank you, Coni for this gem of a book. I will be sharing it with others to keep the joy going!
These true accounts are so moving! The deep, life-changing lessons of faith and character in both the kids and the adults testify of the work of God's Spirit that we all need to "grow up."
It blessed me so much, we purchased some as gifts for those who serve in our Kids Ministry
Love this book!
When I Grow Up is an amazing look into the lives of Tanzanian children who attend Hope of the Nations school.
Coni Knepper has woven Bible truths and applications into these beautiful, touching stories.
I can’t wait to read these with my grandchildren when they come for sleepovers.
Bonus: there are downloads that come with this book.
When you begin reading this book, please make sure you have some tissue close by. The precious stories of some of the Tanzanian children will bring tears to your eyes. Many are often found living on the streets because they have no parents. Their stories will make you want to book the next international flight to Tanzania and embrace them.
