Reading Picture Books With your Child

~It is crucial to understand ~

Dialogic reading

Help your child become the storyteller. You are the listener, the questioner, and the audience for your child. Children learn most from books when they are actively involved. Children who read books with an adult using this method become better readers and it prepares them to be ahead in school.

Dialogic Method using
The PEER sequence technique.
Prompt your child to say something about the book.
Expand your child's response by rephrasing and adding information.
Evaluate your child's response.
Repeat the prompt to make sure your child has learned from the expansion.

Picture books can help to instill the habit of loving books. When you use the PEER technique your child will look forward to reading sessions with you.

Each book in this series was written with this method in mind. Your child's imagination, language skills and confidence will grow after only a few times reading together.
